Any word on private trackers' responsing to this supposed speed boost? Does it violate Bram's BT guidelines, like tracker Announce times? All this ratio, ratio, talk is fine enough, but cannot be enforced. I want to know if big private trackers that only allow a handful of clients (and only unmodded) allow this client.

Can't say I know about the private tracker question cocoi. You'd need to give some examples so I could check. Certainly I've never had any trouble with it any place I've been but I know that's just one user's experience.

As for bit torrent in good faith, all this mod does is use a different balance in upload chokes. You still share quite fairly. If you want more details you can always read the paper it's an implementation of, over at its site on the University of Washington!

Not the most os x friendly, and definitely not the prettiest app on the block - but for the occasional torrent I want a little more control over I used to use the original Azureus, and this is much nicer.

Fantastic. Exactly the same as Azureus 2.5 (albeit 1 or 2 extra/different options in settings), but meant to download a lot faster.
My previous Azureus settings are optimised anyway, so I didn't see the claimed 70% increase (with Azureus I get d/l speeds 4x faster than Transmission for instance, anyway)...

...but I use it for a different reason. I can now have 2 copies of Azureus on my mac. Even though they can't be run simultaneously (whichever you launch first takes preference, the other then refuses to launch), it's useful to have 2 as normally your settings should be vastly different depending on whether you are downloading a private torrent or a public one.
For instance, private torrents should really have DHT disabled because DHT allows non-registered users to infiltrate the swarm. This is bad for Private torrents because:
1) The torrent that is being shared by your client with non- users, does not count towards your ratio. You could have uploaded 100gb through DHT, but you get 0 credit even though your client shows you uploaded that amount.
2) Your passkey will be sent to non- users on your peer list. If you want to trust a lot of anonymous users with your user details and ratio, get no benefit at all and open yourself up to a sizable risk, be my guest, (until you get caught)!
3) Do not complain to that your ratio is dropping while you continue to seed, your private tracker admins will not be interested.
4) You should also hope that one or more of the anonymous users you are sharing the torrent with does not have a cracked client, otherwise he will be doing to you, what you are trying to do to other users!

.....and that's just problems with DHT in private torrents.....many other settings have to be altered too. Rather than keep changing multiple Azureus settings every time, this way I can use Azureus with independant settings for my private torrents, and use this BitTyrant with different settings for my public torrents.

Re:Interface.....yes, just as ugly as Azureus, but I'm not there to admire it.......when this and Azureus can d/l stuff much much faster than any other client, I can't complain.

Re:Icon.....ugly. Just use any old nice icon instead (apple-i, click the icon, apple-v to paste what you want instead)

Re:nasty......this prog HAS borrowed from Azureus, but unlike Xtorrent, which stole/profited from Transmission without giving any any credit where it is due, at least in this case the authors (Washington Uni) FULLY credited Azureus and have explained what they've altered and why.

Finally: it's based on Azureus 2.5 (thankfully) rather than the terrible v3, and as it's based on Azureus, you can use the same plugins, I just re-downloaded safepeer and put it into the BitTyrant plugins folder and it works fine.

EDIT: After spending more time using this program, I have to append my comment below.

Yes, it IS much faster (about 2x faster) than any other torrent prog I've tried (eg, Transmission/xTorrent/Acquisition/BitRocket), APART from.....Azureus...

.....I still can only get about 1/2 of the d/l speed of my Azureus install.

Go figure.....it SHOULD be at least comparable, (the authors claim it's faster) but for some reason it simply isn't as good as the standard Azureus on my setup after testing multiple torrent files.

I have since gone back to solely using Az for my downloads :D (with the added hassle of having to change those settings every time I switch between public/private too :D )

Seems to me this app has been heavily inspired by TextMate, but hasn't got it's bundles.

This is interesting. Made by a swede, so there is definitely potential to expect here. And it can't hurt with some competition in this field of applications.

Having said that, I must say that such an undertaking, to create yet another text editor is a fairly bold one.

I own TextMate and SubEthaEdit. Both apps are, in my opinion, pretty solid in what they do. Their approaches are a bit different (and I guess that's why they hold ground against each other's competition); TextMate being my main workhorse, perfectly brilliant for any kind of programming and general text editing, including Unix shell operation and low level system tinkering, etc. etc. SubEthaEdit is THE tool to use, for collaborational needs. And it's pretty darn competent at doing most of the things that TextMate can handle (although TextMate's feature set is more advanced and further expanded than SubEthaEdit).

So, this leaves the question: what's going to be the route for ForgEdit? Is it just going to be an alternative to TextMate, minus ≈10 bucks? I'm not sure that is going to seal the deal, as there are already other cheap, well, even free alternatives, such as the free Smultron (also swedish made), skEdit ($25, more or less strictly web oriented) and others.

Conclusion: ForgEdit definitely need something genuinely NEW, to survive in this increasingly populated software field. Otherwise, I don't see a reason to choose it over the aforementioned editors (not to mention Xcode).

But I'm a fan, and I'm definitely keeping an eye out for ForgEdit! It's looking nice already, but again, I'd like to see some new innovations withing this app.

I like what I see so far. It starts up quickly and has a clean interface that takes up little room on my MacBook screen. This is also the only cocoa text editor I've found (so far, anyway) that lets me easily re-load a text document using another encoding in seconds, which has come in handy when opening some legacy documents left over from an old OS 8/9 installation.

I'd like to eventually see a command to invoke ForgEdit from the terminal, a la Smultron.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Some comments:
cocoi: ForgEdit is not inspired by TextMate. Why make another? My inspiration comes mostly from UltraEdit and an old Borland IDE.

bitnix: This is the editor i missed working as a developer on the mac. If i didn't feel it added some value to the existing fauna, i would never have made it (in a nutshell, the featues i miss most from the competition are tab-indents-selection, tabbed editing, user-definable key bindings, file drawer, and an easy way to edit modes/file types).

spacecat85: ForgEdit does come with a command line tool, called forged. The first time you start the app, it asks if you want to install a 'synchorinzed tool'. Synchronized because it does not return until the file is closed again (as opposed to the 'open' shell command that does return right away). I've realized that synchronized tool is not very descriptive, so it has been changed to command line tool in b10.

Love this app, saved me a lot of hassle on Linux installations, syncing the MBR and everything... developers deserve a lot of credit!

Apple seem to have switched to a new EFI format with the latest Mac Book Pro systems. This product doesn't seem to run on these systems.

this is a great utility, I use it for triple booting (leopard, xp and ubuntu). The only problem is that this thing made Undercover completely useless on my mbp... I hang around too much with my mbp and some security is needed, in rEFIt site it says they will add some more options (like password, configuring a default partition etc...) I really hope it doesn't take too much. If I really didn't need triple boot I wouldn't use it, and for those who have security programs like Undercover and don't really need triple booting, I advice u 2 avoid rEFIt for now

When my page looks broken, I pray it's also broken on WebKit :) Then it's just a matter of a few clicks and voila -- unexpected paddings, collapsed margins, whacky rules cascade -- it's all there.

How did it take me so long to discover this incredible app? Xyle Scope is invaluable for anyone who works with CSS and is one of these few, special gems that really deserve to be given the much-abused "must have" label.

I'll stick with a browser that can pass the ACID test. I'll take Camino or Shiira over this any day.

by
halleck, 2007-03-23

Heh, kinda cool and ultra-lightweight. It has a little ways to go, but I'm keeping it around as a third (or fourth?) browser- handy when I just need to check out a page or two and don't want to fire up Camino with my last session, etc. Needs a handler for opening HTML files on the disk, a menu option for new window, and keyboard shortcuts for Copy/Paste/Select All (especially from the address bar!)

In general it works okay. I'm posting with it right now!

Translation: Then what the hell is this?
There are easier tests from the apothecary that are cheaper or even free, for god's sake.

Can't say that I disagree. Especially the whole 'sex for boy / sex for girl' thing is... humorous :)
