Comment and replies on Afloat:
http://infinite-labs.net/afloat/ has a pubic beta of Afloat 2 for Leopard going on right now. Due to abuse (I won't name names in their entirety, cough*mac*cough*ate*cough) registration is required, but it doesn't take long.
Afloat itself works great and is really useful, but PlugSuit (the bundle loader it uses) seems to stop working randomly. If PS doesn't work, you can use Afloat under SIMBL by using Show Package Contents on the Afloat installer and adding the bundle to your SIMBL plugins folder. It's a really useful plugin even if it doesn't work under Finder or other Carbon apps (due to a limitation with InputManagers).
Comment and replies on VectorDesigner:
FYI I meant "vector software" obviously, but my friends and I were watching a soccer game at the time. Wow.
Picked this up as part of the MacHeist bundle. The path-creation tools are smooth, reliable and intuitive, with none of the 4-finger modifiers needed for vector manipulation in photoshop or illustrator. A pleasant surprise.
However as of 1.01 this app still needs longer in the oven and lacks features I look for in a professional tool. There's no EPS/PDF/PSD import, so good luck getting your work into it from a different application; additions/subtractions/intersections are destructive; There's no stroke styles, only solid/dashed; and the dealbreaker for me, the select tool is almost unusable. Selecting usually results in jogging an object unintentionally, and the tool prevents you from selecting a smaller object on top of a larger one! How are you meant to work with complex illustrations when you have to drag backgrounds out of the way to access details?
A couple of corrections for mejogid: it does indeed have blur (Filters->Blur), merging (if you mean addition/subtraction, which it calls Boolean operations), and layers too (Inspector->second tab, although they're buggy and I'm damned if I can work out what use they are in this app.) No masking or gradient meshes that I can see though.
A correction to my previous post - I was (mostly) wrong about the select tool refusing to select items, and indeed it does work as you would expect under normal circumstances. (The problems I had were caused by a bug that had duplicated every object in my test image several times, confusing the select tool no end.)
So, quirky, but not nigh-unusable by any means!
This shows great promise, but it's currently a lot of money to ask for something with such few features.
In it's current state this is the opposite of intuitive. It almost never behaves as I expect. I tried to use it for some diagrams for university and I just gave up and switched to another program.
sorry, but this software drives me crazy evertime I give it a new try with an updated version - right, there are a lot of features, but basic functionality like proper selecting of objects is not present at all (beside other weirdnesses). like i said before, the approach is nice and promising, but releasing this as something else than beta is awkward and the price they are asking is obscene... sorry guys.
Very nice vector drawing application.
It is simple and easy to use.
I love it.
Let me just say that while this app may be lacking some of the features that Illustrator has, it does an awesome job at about 80% of what I used Illustrator for and it only weighs in at 12mb. This app launches fast and in some areas has better more intuitive features than Illustrator. Fast, versatile and small. Don't be fooled by anyone this is a great app that will only get better.
I had a similar experience to danishkirel. This software can be a nightmare to use if you want to do something simple like draw a few circles with arrows between them. Groups don't scale at all like you'd expect, box selection is still broken, etc. The worst part is when you give up and move to Inkscape but realize that VectorDesigner doesn't let you export your work to SVG. PDF is the nearest thing to a lossless way out, but it's not ideal.
VectorDesigner is definitely not intuitive, not powerful, and not worth the price they're asking.
I got this as part of MacHeist a few weeks ago and only started using it for any real work tonight. It crashed after about 20 minutes but seemed pretty good before and after for doing some simple text / curved arrow diagrams. Help is non-existent -- I don't really want to need to watch a video to get assistance with basic functionality.
I definitely would not pay $70 for this, but as part of MacHeist it's a good deal - hopefully this will lead to an expanded user base which will lobby the devs. to make some improvements. Locking in to a proprietary format is really annoying.
I really like Vector Designer for the things I do with it.
BUT what would really help: artistic line styles. Everything
is so clean when done in VD.
oh and randomized gradients like particles and steam and speed blurred stripes...Or "gradient from image"... that would be awesome and inspiring. I guess you can work around that somehow, but having it as a tool...

Really like it. As a complete photo editing noob, I found it really easy to use. The controls are all really intuitive (in my opinion) and the UI is gorgeous. I'll be buying it in the upcoming MacHeist bundle.
Beautiful? You bet! Useful? Sort of. It definitely has a ton of potential... but for now, it's all hype that's leading this app in the popularity ratings. Remember, this is JUST MY OPINION!
Not bad. Performance is bad on large images.
It's what photoshop elements for the mac SHOULD be.

Apparently if you use 1.0b3, ctrl-click, click "Show Package Contents," and drag "Afloat.bundle" to your SIMBL directory (/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/), you will be able to use Afloat on Leopard. Make sure you have the latest version of SIMBL. For some reason, it doesn't seem to be working for me.
