Great app. Very useful!

Comes in handy when you need it! It's not an everyday app for me, but when I need a tool that it provides it takes care of business and gets outta the way.

I really wish the ruler could interactively go below 58px. Maybe the numeric indicator could just flip outside of the ruler?

Hmm, not sure I agree with your assessment of the interface, wombat. I actually really like the interface. I think it's one of Apple's best-looking pro apps.

Of course, there's more to it that looks, but I have no contention with you there.

The stated price is actually for the video editing suite Final Cut Studio 2 (which includes Soundtrack Pro). But it is also bundled with Logic Pro 8 and a ton of Apple Loops packs as Logic Studio for only $499. The interface is also much better in version 2.0.

Yojimbo is exactly as the developer described it: effortless and reliable. It may not have all the whiz-bang features of some of its competitors, but Yojimbo's sheer simplicity, elegance, and reliability make it an absolute joy to use and a perfect solution for storing all the odds and ends that don't seem to fit anywhere else.

I'm a long-time Bare Bones customer and must admit that the company's excellent reputation had a strong influence over my selection of this app over others. After 8 months of heavy usage, however, Yojimbo has certainly proven itself and I have absolutely no regrets.

As for academic research, outlining, or writing books, there may be better choices. But for quickly collecting everyday tidbits of information and reliably retrieving them later with minimal fuss, Yojimbo is hard to beat.

I was using DevonThink pro... but I guess that was too complicated for
what I was doing. I'm very much happy with Yojimbo now but it has a lot of
place for improvement.

The lack of nested folders and inability to link to contacts are major downsides compared with SOHO Notes.

Against that the general feel of the application is lighter, cleaner and less cluttered: being able to customize folders is a major plus (can't do that on SOHO). I guess i'll kep both runnning in tandem and see whether Yojimbo corrects those two major drawbacks.

I checked it out, I would certainly recommend people check out Keep It Together before deciding on it. Does pretty well the same thing but keeps all the files in their original format. Simple and easy to integrate into your workflow. Oh and it's cheaper...

Yojimbo is clean, light and easy to use. I used the demo for the full 30 days, then actually paid for the unlocked version. This program is far and away better than DEVONThink (for which I also have a license) at doing exactly what you expect with as few steps as possible.

Does that white source pane drive anyone else nuts? Is there an easy way to change it to blue?

I'm a new Yojimbo user with version 1.4.1, and while it took me more than 30 days to warm to it, I knew that an info organizer was going to be useful once I trained my brain into it. Essentially I am using it the same way that I use Gmail, with tagging and smart collections. For the minutiae and random notes that I accumulate daily, Yojimbo is a very competent inbox, easier than maintaining years of saved documents, easier than storing notes in Gmail, and widely supported by other apps that I enjoy (QuickSilver, etc.) And hey, it's BareBones.

Only obvious caveat so far is the drop dock is not quite configurable enough... having it at the top or bottom of the screen would help with dual-monitors and a side-mounted OSX dock. More dual screen options are a Look Forward To.

UPDATE: Well I've completely ditched Yojimbo. When I first bought it, I pretty much liked everything about Yojimbo except for the fact that you can't have nested folders or user configurable Smart folder. Now I use Journler and it rocks! It does almost everything that Yojimbo does and does them better. The one exception is encrypted entries. You can lock the entire Journal but not individual entries as easily as with Yojimbo.

The best part is Journler's license scheme: It's shareware for personal use unless you can't afford it. Then it's free until you can afford to donate. Check it out here on iusethis. It's a fantastic app.

That's not true. Sadly, Journler 2.5 doesn't support encryption anymore. See here. That's one of the reasons I dumped it and switched to Yojimbo. (Yojimbo has a few missing features, but all in all, I don't regret the move.)

There's no reason why you should "ditch" either of them. They're both great apps.

Very good for organising notes, passwords and webpages. It would be good to be able to add a contacts / things to do / GTD component to it and then it would be complete.

I use it for web clippings. I like how easy it is to just drag a web page onto a folder in the drop dock. My wish list feature would be the ability to tag on the fly when you drag something over.

I really enjoy Yojimbo. I have used it almost daily since I got it over a year ago. But I have been disappointed by its lack of export features. There is an awesome AppleScript here to export your Yojimbo database to a TiddlyWiki.

I think it's odd that you can't encrypt serial numbers. Everything else, but not serial number smart items?

I have demoted Yojimbo, mainly due to its lack of hierarchical structure. Stuff can go into one of a half dozen or so huge buckets, but that's it. It turned into a black hole: Stuff went in and I forgot all about it. I now use it for the strictly defined tasks of keeping passwords and web receipts. For everything else, I ended up turning to DevonThink.
