It's interesting how some people are willing to spend $5 on something they're going to pour down their throat in less time than it will take me to finish this sentence, but they refuse to pay for good software that took untold hours to write and will save you invaluable system resources.
I compared this to AppCleaner and although it's not as user friendly it does a better job for what it's meant. For some applications it was finding MORE associations. So think about that the next time you scarf down $5 worth of coffee.
I want to note that I just paid the $5 for this app, because it's a great one, and is worth $5 to me.
However (as it is currently labeled) it is NOT freeware and should NOT be labeled as such. It is 'shareware' at best, but I would call it '$5 + demo'.
I just used AppDelete to remove AppCleaner from my computer.
AppDelete suddenly held up the tip jar after a few uses, and announced to me that it has turned shareware for this latest version. I don't have anything against the principles of paid software. I DO however find the way in which the software communicated this information rude and distasteful. The information should have been shown when I was about to update the software, not when I'm about to use it.
Hi from Reggie the Developer for AppDelete! :-)
I want to thank all of you for your posts and I do apologize for any confusion regarding the "free" label for AppDelete 2.0. I am currently waiting for this site to update the listed info and I expect it will be done soon. As for the switch over to AppDelete 2.0 again I do apologize for any confusion as it was not meant to be misleading in any way. It's just simply the old version is being told a new one is available. You can read more about this on my site by clicking the Homepage link above, and please do email me from my site for any further questions. Also there is now a 2.0.1 update available for download. Thank you for you interest and for using AppDelete! :-)
Sincerely,
Reggie Ashworth
Comment and replies on Shimo:
As has been said on a bunch of other websites:
Version 2 is simply far too expensive for what it does. Thank goodness I was able to find download links for the final release pre version 2. I appreciate the hard work you've doubtlessly put into it, but there are apps that i find MUCH more helpful that don't charge a cent.
Please consider that Shimo 2 is not only a user interface replacement for Cisco's client anymore. It's rather a complete replacement for Cisco's client, because it comes with vpnc, which can do almost all the stuff Cisco's client can do. Moreover Shimo 2 supports several other popular VPN protocols like OpenVPN, IPSec and SSH.
Therefore Shimo 2 is completely different than version 1 was and has to be judged accordingly!
could anybody please post a link to a download page for Shimo 1.x as I have no use for the functionality version 2 provides and assume it's in the developers intention to go on providing the basic Shimo 1 as freeware through other channels (make it available as a free download from his page, please!)
kind regards!
Vpnc, an integral part of Shimo, is released under the GPL. Would you mind to publish the source code for Shimo too to comply with the GPL?
Many thanks.
I have not modified the sourcecode of vpnc and therefore I just offer an interface to control a GPL-licensed product like vpnc. Please read the GPL and don't comment before you know exactly what you are talking about. Does Apple open their whole sourcecode as they use GPL-licensed components???
Asking €12,95 for Shimo while being an extension to an open source project doesn't look very respectful. Furthermore Apple hosts a website with portions of their (open source) projects, being: http://developer.apple.com/opensource/
Shimo is otherwise an application with a strong design!
Let's continue this discussion in our forum at nexUmoja.org. I really like to talk with Shimo's users about the price model and why I had to change it...
how have you learned to price a soft. 12.95 hahaha?? why not 9.99? I could pay for shimo 2.0 but not using paypal... it s.cks. Is there another way to pay for it, like using credit card directly?
For those who are looking for previous versions of Shimo, a quick Google search for "Shimo 1.0.7" will yield sources containing earlier versions that had a friendlier/gentler reminder for supporting the program. Version 1.0.7 was the last donation-ware build, and was posted April 5, 2008. Other earlier versions are available elsewhere online, too, such as 1.0.3, 1.0.4
In comparison to Shimo 2.0, I would recommend users to stick with 1.0.x -- unless you want an obtrusive "nag screen" that does not go away unless you submit to the forcibly blackmail-purchasing of a license.
Great program, bad marketing ploy!

Version 2.0 goes far beyond what 1.0.x did—and the price is absolutely reasonable! Also Paypal actually is a great choice for a payment provider! Great app, very useful!
re: tommie's comment. I don't quite see why it would be wrong to charge for something that is an extension to open source software, as long as the added features will make up for the added price. Just to mention one mere example; take a look at Safari, which is a software built upon open source code, for which you'll indirectly end up paying for.
Just updated to 2.0.1 today (from a 1.x version, I think). Got an obnoxious nag window that can't be dismissed touting "registered version" features that I already had in the 1.x and asking for a price (€14.95) well out of line for something which only nominally improves the flow of using Cisco VPNs.
No explanation of the "advanced features". "Unlimited connection time" which I had in 1.x, meaning they've intentionally crippled 2.x. Over priced "upgrade".
FAIL.
The price for a Shimo license is €12.95 and not €14.95. Furthermore I have to say it again that Shimo2 is not just an update to the old 1.X release. It s a completely new piece of software which can be used independently from Cisco's client and supports many more VPN protocols. If you compare this feature set to our competitors' then it becomes clear that €12.95 for a license is even relatively cheap...

Agreed, since the "donation" demands stopped it working I'm no longer using this. Though if you use your smarts the previous version is pretty easy to find.
Otherwise: http://osx.iusethis.com/app/appcleaner is free, and does the same job.
