The only problem with Adium is that it's mac-only :-)
A really great app!
Outstanding Mac app! Only 2 problems:
1) File transfers can be a bit flaky at times.
2) Forget A/V chats.
@enigmaticjester:
iChat doe snot require users to use either .Mac or ichat. When adding a buddy (or setting up your own account) make sure that you have AIM selected, instead of Bonjour or .Mac. I would still recommend adium over ichat (save the av, and stability advantages)
The 1.0 beta is awesome. It drops my MSN connection when coming back from sleeping, but other than that is bug free. If Skype / Video chat was added somehow I would be in heaven. I'm not holding my breath for this...
Great concept with a very nice default interface and many customizations. Supports the popular IM protocols.
It's very buggy in all .8x versions and seems like 1.x still needs some work. Some of the most problem areas:
dropped connections
loses passwords (keychain items just vanish)
file transfers don't always work
automatic encryption enabling flaky (sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't)
meta contacts sometimes put through a connection on the wrong protocol
deleted contacts sometimes re-appear all by themselves
Still the most usable IM program for Mac OS because of its feature list, interface and ability to support so many protocols.
Been using this since its beginnings. The simplicity is what made me try it, its elegance is why it's still on my desktop.
Very nice app. I use it almost constantly at home. Unfortunately, being "just" a wrapper around libgaim makes it a bit difficult to add new features (read, audio and/or iSight/webcam support).
It's awesome. I just hope it improves in stability when it gets to version 1.0, because on occasion it will randomly crash.
If only it could connect to my built-in iSight...
Fire is a good alternative to Adium, and IMHO a better app. It took has file transfer and a/v issues, but I find the interface far less confusing.
Very cool; also works with Gizmo (VOIP app)
Skype support would be great (esp for the IMchat side of this voip prog).
other than taht, this is an excellent app and is highly configurable/skinnable.
It allows multiple logins on multiple services, which is useful. It has the most horrifying default dock icon known to man--an animated duck that flaps its wings when a message arrives--which makes the app virtually unusable until it is replaced. Fortunately, there are many icon sets available and one can replace the dock icon with a non-animated version.
Adium will do until a native gaim port turns up. It would be much improved if there were an easier way to turn off the dock animation.
The Adium homepage has some issiues lately, eg the 1.0 Beta page cannot be reached. If you want to download the latest beta, it's here: http://adiumx.cachefly.net/Adium_1.0b14.dmg
Keep in mind that it's not considered stable and regular users are advised to use 0.89.1, but IMHO this 1.0 Beta is way better.
domo-kun icon rocks!
mfrank1006, there's a way to make it not animate the dock icon even if you still have the default, but it's buried: an "animate the dock icon" checkbox in the "messages" section of the "advanced" prefs pane.
Me, I use a custom icon I made (adiumxtras.com, search for 'wub') without any 'flapping' type states.
Absolutely love it. I've ditched iChat completely. Having tried quite a few multi-protocol chat programs on multiple OSes, I have to say this is my favorite by a fairly large margin.
To top it all off, it's insanely easy to install plugins, and I've been hooked on customizing it to my preferences (GO LLAMA MENUBAR ICON!!!).
It is a pitty that there is no integrated birthday reminder like in ICQs original software i. e..
Adium is the best in-developement instant messaging client for Mac. It has numerous good features and great customization options. The support for multiple protocols is great, allows me to use only one client for everything.
However the majority of my friends "still" use Live Messenger Service for their instant messaging, and the lack of support for things like Personal messages and custom smileys are still keeping me with using Microsoft Messenger daily.

I really enjoy using this program. It's very easy to create wonderful invitations, flyers and all sorts of page layout!
