I previously used Saft for ad blocking, but this program is much easier to use.

For the folks wondering about whitelists, as of 3.2 (perhaps earlier) Safari Adblock does support whitelisting sites for which you do not want ads blocked. You can add whitelists in two ways:
1) Add a subscription to the URL location of your Adblock Plus format whitelist (i.e. "@@|"
2) Add individual rules on the "Custom Filters" tab of the Safari Adblock preference pane (part of your Safari Preferences)

I use #2 exclusively as there are only a few sites for which I want to disable adblocking. Adding a custom rule is done through a form which allows you to choose whether to block or unblock particular sites or elements. My custom filters consist entirely of sites that I want unblocked based on the beginning of URL (http://www.hulu.com for example), but yours could be more complicated and even include regular expressions.

Enter rules carefully! The default protocol for entering a rule is https: rather than http:, so you may have to change that via a dropdown menu. Also note whether the site you want unblocked starts with a www or not, for example Hulu URLs generally start with the www prefix. Advanced users could enter a regular express for a website that includes both the www-prefixed address and the website.com address (more simple-minded folk like myself can add the two sites separately).

Pixadex will no longer be available as a stand-alone app. It has been merged with CandyBar 3.

Panic released the new version last night and it is a great improvement over version 2. Pixadex is built into CandyBar, so you can manage your library and change system icons through a single, simplified interface. You can also change the appearance of the dock, and many of the iContainers available from Iconfactory have been updated.

Maybe this used to be $13, but it's $30 now. Someone should change the price.

3.0 really is amazing. Interface is easy to use, and beautiful.

isn't 2.0 still available? someone asked for Candybar for Tiger, and I though 2.0 still was downloadble from the page, but I can't find it

@falafeln:
Version 3.1.2 requires leopard, but version 2.6.1 compatible with tiger is still available here.
Note: when launching it for the first time, it will download a small update.

I use this program to manage my laboratory notebook. I highly recommend it to other scientists looking to switch from a paper-based system.

I absolutely love Journler but I'm very weary of putting my life into an application that the developer doesn't even use anymore. It just seems wrong. See the Journler forums (Page Torn Out section) for more. This is the quote from the developer that has me rethinking my use of Journler:

"And so a confession. While I've continued to work on Journler -- I'd like to see the program highly stable and functional as much as anyone else -- I don't use it anymore. I haven't written in Journler since the end of June. I keep a hand written journal now. "

I just found this yesterday and spent half the day "moving in." It ends my search for an app that would turn my laptop into a portable GTD-oriented office. Now I'm trying to think of something I can give Yojimbo to do.

Works wonderfully. But I am eagerly awaiting Journler's spin-off called "Lex", because I really want to manage projects with it most of the time.

Comment and replies on Skim:

Skim is much better than preview for viewing scientific PDFs. However, the program lacks proper support for selecting text in columns. Also, the highlight and underline tools need to be improved because often annotated text is hard to distinguish. The same goes for notes, whose appearance could be improved to resemble actual sticky notes. Adobe Acrobat does a better job of annotation but is a slower, bloated piece of software.

All of those complaining about the column issue, complain to apple, it is a bug in PDFKit and is, therefore, in every app that uses it (Skim, Preview, etc).

This is why it is not there in Acrobat, as it uses its own PDF rendering engine.

Actually, PDFKit does have the ability to highlight column wise, though technically its via the box shape. In skim (or preview), press 'alt' then click and drag to highlight text in a column. Spread the word!

I'm still using Preview just for the simplisity of having one app for viewing. If this could open images then I would be all over this app!

This is one of those apps that makes you wonder "how the heck I didn't know it already?", it is just great. It has everything I always wanted in a PDF viewer, bookmarks, highlights, notes, table of contents with thumbnails, transitions..I could go on forever. And the price is unbeatable!

Being disappointed with Preview I was looking for a decent PDF reader. I found Skim, which even exceeded my expectations. It is both powerful and easy to use application with many useful features. Some of my favorites are: predictable maximization (Preview always does strange things when I maximize), auto-refresh when file changes on disk (a must when generating PDFs from LaTeX), presentation mode (for my Beamer slides), but there are many other features (like bookmarks and notes) that may be useful to you!
