Comment and replies on Cha-Ching:
A promising start to a complete reversal of mundane and sterile finance handling.
After playing with the application and leveraging the power of keywords (a.k.a. tags) and smart drawers, I have—in very little—time created the ability for multiple accounts, statement reconciliation, and budgeting. Some of these features are forthcoming from the developers, such as a mutiple accounts—according to a blogger that has spoken with "A Midnight App's" lead. For now though, I can only wonder at how it will grow and what v1.0 will bring.
I gladly paid to watch this app grow and give an early helping hand to this talented group of designers/developers.
I will continue to experiment, and already find it very usable regardless of some noticeable bugs. Remember, this IS a beta release. I eagerly await new releases! The fun of finance is back... or rather... is finally here. ;)
Fun little application... makes managing money and transaction fun! Lots of bugs though... can't wait for an update! I bought it also to support the developers.
I have it, but I don't find it any useful.
I absolutely loathed this application when it was at 0.3, but now, at 0.4, the difference is like night and day.
I don't understand how a financial tracking program can be even remotely useful without a way to sync with what's in your bank account. So unfortunately, I will probably ignore this program.
enjourni, the developer's blog states that the next release will definitely support QIF imports. Given that Cha-Ching is only at version 0.4 right now and each release has had substantial improvements, I wouldn't disregard it before it comes out of beta.
At this point it's another one of those eye-candy over substance apps (think Disco). It's pretty but has so many shortcomings that it's mostly unusable. Couple that with no documentation and you get a nothing app. I can't believe people pay for beta's anyway and I'm dang glad I got this for free (MacHeist). It's supposed to be this fun and simple to use program but I find it so unintuitive it's frustrating.
I'll check back when it gets closer to 1.0.
I love this program so much! I don't care what people say about its "shortcomings," because it is beta and therefore it is being improved.
If this app could be transmogrified over to Swedish with all what that implies, life would be a bit easier. (I.e. I don't have to boot Parallells to run SPCS any more.)
cha-junk. It won't even launch on my 1Ghz Powerbook which is running 10.4.8
Purchased last night, and so far I love it. I have a few complaints regarding the qif file format importing, but that's largely due there being no actual standard for it. I'm not a coder, but I hope that's something they can write around.
gorgeous. if you need to manage your own money (who doesn't?) and are looking for something cocoa-licious, this is worth a look. it is in BETA, so there are bound to be crashes or whatever. I bought it anyway cause future upgrades are free, the forums are lively, and the UI and security kick ass.
I kind of agree with the comment about eye-candy. There is now partial integration with banking websites in that you can surf onto the site within the program, however, you still have to manually sign into the site and click download the correct file(s). I wish it could do that for me! There's certainly room for improvement in the budget/tagging/report features as well. I hope for improvement in the next couple of releases. Save your money, don't pay for the beta. Trial it first. You'll see what I mean.
Got a free serial from MacHeist. It suffers from too much gold plating and not enough robustness. Yes it's a beta, but people are paying for it so in my mind the developers should prioritize the essentials. It is quite pretty though!
Note that it DOES NOT ENCRYPT YOUR DATA. It stores it in a plaintext XML file in Application Support!
I hacked together a system to store the data on an encrypted DMG that is mounted to Application Support. If you have an encryption utility you might want to use that instead.

I'm actually pretty happy with Cashbox right now- my encryption contraption works for it as well.

The much-hyped 1.0 version is now out, and it is worthless. A joke, at the users' expense.
I've been playing with version 1.0 and Cha-Ching is easily the prettiest money manager out there.
However, Cha-Ching is seriously lacking in basic financial features that a serious user needs. There is no documentation, the website contains little information on upgrading and there is no way to submit a bug except via a forum.
Way over hyped and asking $40 for eye candy is frankly insulting.
Like others, I was surprised and disappointed to find that Cha-Ching didn't provide any kind of linkage to my online banking account. Inexplicably, TUAW has raved about this app . . . my experience after purchase hasn't been anywhere near as rosy. Most disappointing of all is the website, an empty facade with nothing there for users, no manual, and no documentation.
Completely unacceptable for an app priced at $40. I'm becoming more and more dissapointed with Mac financial apps every day. I'm beginning to pick up books to learn how to program and perhaps make something better than what is out there right now.
I had problems importing .qif files, it just crashes

Groxx, This functionality already exists (at least in OS X 10.4).
Just do a "Get Info" on the downloaded file and look under "More Info:". There you will find a heading called "Where from:" that contains the originating URL. :)
