Comment and replies on AppFresh:
really worth a download!
also have a look for AppDate...
Eh, this app is hit or miss. Quite often it will say there's an update, and even after I install it, it still thinks I have the old version. That's probably the biggest issue I have with AppFresh.
You could pass on this app, you wouldn't miss out on much. In most cases you're better off just relying on each application's update checks.
captsaltyjack, check out the new release, the problem you had has been fixed.
Haven't updated my mac apps in quite a long time, several months at least. This was invaluable to me this evening and will continue to be so.
It launched without a hitch and updated over 90 apps, with no problems whatsoever.
Absolutely love the feature where you can chose the download link, very clever indeed!
Thank you Devs =)

What is AppDate and where can I find it/compare it to AppFresh?
I like this app. We are in need of one central update program. Some apps don't autoupdate or always ask to install or you have to go back to website to find another version. Many people never update their programs because they forget or are too lazy. This is bad because updates can fix security holes, system freezes & or file corruption/deletion. AppFresh is not complete but is a great start on something that will become very useful.
Good...but why make the downloader a modal dialog? Why should the whole app become unusable just because it's downloading one file? This should be done in the background (like every web browser does).
For the most part, this app does what it claims. It is a bit annoying that it uses modal dialogs for pretty much everything, causing the system to bounce the icon on the dock and announce via speakable items that it needs attention. I hope the developer can adjust this behavior in the future.
However, there is one big issue with this app -- it relies on iusethis data being up-to-date, which it seems is not true currently. Earlier in the week I manually checked a handful of apps I have, and found that two were not up-to-date. One was coincidentally released the day before so I can understand it not being updated here yet, but the other was updated weeks ago.
I filed "new version" reports for both of these apps, but I don't know how long it will take to be made live on the site. So until then, AppFresh will continue to report outdated versions as being up-to-date.
Appfresh, isnt very fresh. Its not getting a leopard update in a timely manner.
AppFresh 0.5.5 was just released with Leopard compatibility fixes. Everything should work on Leopard now, including Apple Software Update. Please also have a look at the blog for a screenshot of the new Preview 6 with a new user interface and lots of new features.
It only shows 10 of the 208 installed applications on my system, no filtering.
tried it on 10.5.1 and leaked memory like a sieve. it consumed 1.5GB and brought my machine to it's knees.
This application is designed beautifully. And extremely useful. However at this point its probably the most poorly programmed app I've ever seen on OSX. It will literally take down my entire machine. If I open it up on OSX, i see my CPU go to 160% and eventually it crashes. But then pretty much everything is gone to hell (finder slows to a crawl) and I eventually have to reboot.
Whoever wrote this app is a fantastic designer, but a terrible programmer. I would love to see this app get polished up for version 1.0 as its one of my favorite shareware utilities.
I'm using 0.5.5 on Leopard 10.5.1
Other than this application being unusable, it's great....
It's designed so well... and the options and feature list are fantastic... but I just absolutely cannot use it.
As others have mentioned, this thing just completely takes over. My poor PowerBook G4 doesn't stand a chance, it just gets slaughtered.
I would love to use this application... I really would... I have a heck of a time keeping things up to date, and this looks like it'd do it beautifully and leave me feeling happy... Instead, I'm left unsatisfied, with a fan spinning so fast it sounds like it's eating my laptop, instead of cooling it off...
It's working great on 10.5.1 for me.
Since its still just a preview build, lets not be too hard on this app. I cant wait to see it stablize as its really a fantastic piece of software, even with its current problems.
this app just crashed my macbook pro.. couldn´t do anything for about 10 minutes.. an then the app crashes... but if..someday... this´ll work this would be the killerapp..
I agree with most others here... it isn't very useful as-is, but if it can deliver on all it promises, it will be a pretty amazing app.
lol its to iusethis as iScrobbler is to last.fm
