Comment and replies on Nisus Writer Pro:
Yippie! A very reliable and fast wp with all central features. Great!
Excellent, with very responsive support, a helpful user community, a robust macro language, and a non-proprietary file format (rtf). Better WordPerfect importing than NeoOffice or AbiWord (which both use libwpd). I've come to use it for nearly all of my single-authored documents - but it's missing a key feature for any collaboration: track changes.
Comment and replies on Pukka:
the new version (1.6) looks great! very very lovely program. Here's a feature request: Is there a way to tell pukka to open a bookmark as an tab in safari. i would like such a feature. It's a little bit annoying to have 20+ browser windows open :-(
Pukka 1.6.3 still crashes on Leopard !
This is a nifty little application and I did use it for a week or so. However, it doesn't offer anything I can't find using the official Delicious extension for Firefox, from Yahoo! -- and the extension is free. And integrates directly with the browser in place of the standard bookmarks. Pukka requires that you use a bookmarklet and doesn't have a way to simply click on common/suggested tags for your new entry.
If you're using safari, this is probably a decent solution. If you're not using safari, the standard extension is better.
very nice app. however started costing $5 and now is $17, which is more than expensive, considering the current difficult times. but nice work, developer
Comment and replies on Nisus Writer Express:
I really like this app. The last time M$ was ahead was with Word 5.1.
If Nisus Writer Pro (announced for 4/07) will work, Nisus has all features for complex writing.
Mellel helped me get through my dissertation, but I like NWE for the little projects that require footnotes. (It seems a little slow opening on my G4 iBook though.)
Comment and replies on Together:
The 2.0 version of (Keep It) Together is a major improvement. It combines some new features Now using QuickLook-technology it shows the content of files in a very fast and convenient way. There is also a dropper (which resembles some other organizers, which used this feature earlier. I think Together is the #1 app for browsing a huge amount of files. In the difficult field of organizing information, there are some features which are not implemented and would be able to make this app complete.
What's still missing?
1. The ability to tell the application to auto-write tags and labels into the spotlight-comments (like e.g. nifty box or punakea). That would be nice for people who switch between computers or working in groups on projects or for people who decide in a year to leave Together. If you do so, all your organizing tags and labels are gone, they are in no way attached to the files but only stored in the app's database.
2. Folders, groups and smart groups. Together now supports folders and folders packed in folders. That helps holding the list of items which belong to a special case (etc) short. But it doesn't support groups or smart groups packed into folders. I don't understand why. I think almost all people want to have at last a folder called archive which holds some goups (e.g. customer-groups or project-groups) and all files which are tagged "archive". It's hard to scroll through 300 groups and smart groups on an macbook. With the support of folders holding groups and smartgroups one can reduce this to 10 folders each containing a bunch of groups and smart groups.
3. Here's a "sugar on top"-suggestion: it would be nice when the files could be previewed in full screen mode and the comments field would be a floating field (watch the app "Papers" to see what i mean), that would be a nice feature to add comments and notes to long pdf-files).
So here is the summary: Together is a great app for conveniently storing tons of information and for browsing through it. It has nice labeling and tagging features. The organizing features are not fully sufficient, there are some lacks which limit the freedom of the user in organizing the stuff the way he likes, another problem is that you cannot switch to another application without loosing your tags. (I write this last point because i had the problem after using an early version of k.i.t. which collapsed orgainizing 800 mb of pdfs and rtf-files).
Needs .Mac syncing to be useful for me.
Still have the previous version, as this one is 10.5 only.
As to the previous version, I've tried to get into it a few times... but the GLARING inadequacies prevent me from using it. Two biggies: doesn't search spotlight comments (WHY?!), and doesn't allow nesting groups. So the "groups" aren't really groups... just flat folders.
Yes, it lets you see your files in one location. Yes, it gives you categorization options (though severely limited). Yes, it can open most kinds of files.
No, it can't change HOW you open your files (what? no MPlayer support? ick, no). No, it can't nest groups. Yes, it crashes often.
No, it's not worth the money. Barely worth ANY money, actually. I wouldn't use it if it were free.
Unless the newest version has some truly massive changes in both the underlying design and the user interface, my opinion is extremely unlikely to change.
@groxx The new 2.0 version was completely rewritten and addresses the missing features you mentioned. I have ensured KIT 1.x is stable on Tiger and Leopard with no known problems. While I'm not adding features to the old version, I still support it in that way. Send me crash logs if you're having problems.
I love it! Much better thatn Yojimbo and Devonthink, I stiil has to see with usage how it handles large databases, but so far so good, beautiful and easy to use, and the reason to buy, a committed developer, not the type of get the money and run. I hope to see this app growing, because it could be one must.
I had been using Circus Ponies NoteBook for years when I made the switch. I transferred over 5GB of data from NoteBook's painfully slow file into Together. It took a long time but it was well worth it. Together is a very well written application with a top notch user interface and the developer is quick to respond to bugs and questions. Highly recommended.
my favorite of these kinds of apps. awesome stuff
some things i long for though:
- less memory usage after browsing files,
- and because of that memory issue the possibility to turn off previews when clicking on entries,
- some more flexibility as far as size is concerned for the icon previews (in portrait view mode). think iPhoto. When scrolling with preview turned on, it's also very slow, i think this could need some work.
- the ability to choose the quicknotes format (.txt would be nice).
- a function to ignore certain filetypes from importing. example: temporary download files (you know, these .part files). this would be more convenient for people who set their download folders to ones that are watched for automatic import.
thanks for this software
I love together - I love the interface (although journler is a close second here) and I love the fact that I can view pretty much any file type that I have - including Pages - which DevonThinkPro still doesn't offer.
I am a high school teacher and grad student so I have a ton of files + after trialing journler, DTPO, CircusPonies Notebook + together, I decided to go with together as it just had a more user-friendly 'feel' to it.
However - Once I began to import a lot of information, the program slowed down considerably, froze & required force quit more often that I would like.It doesn't seem to be built for large amounts of data like DevonThink is.
Like Cleveland above I would recommend the following tp the developer:
- less memory usage after browsing files,
- and because of that memory issue the possibility to turn off previews when clicking on entries,
- some more flexibility as far as size is concerned for the icon previews (in portrait view mode).
I think being able to turn the preview off or minimize the size might be exactly what is needed because at the moment I am inclined not to trust Together not to freeze permanently and to take all of my precious info with it
@shanshuprophecy: Icon previews are the culprit for high memory use, and that is something I will be addressing soon. You can disable those in the View Options panel if they're causing problems.
Together can easily handle libraries of 20,000 items or more on an Intel Mac, so it could be that you were having a problem specific to your library. Such problems are usually easily remedied, so please get in touch through the Support pages on my site - thanks. Also, I should mention that as Together keeps all the original files on disk, they will always be accessible.

The best feature for me is the shelf. I can easily drag stuff onto it, and then into the folder or collection I want without opening the main application window.
The other one is using a shortcut key to enter a quick note. It's increased the number of times I actually write down ideas and thoughts by an order of magnitude.
Wow, this applications has come a long way. Before I bought Yojimbo when Together was still called K.I.T. I tested it and found it lacking. Now I'm going to buy a copy and ditch Yojimbo for this.
Indispensible app for me now.

Nifty Box has a nice clean interface and does a good job in oranizing your files by tagging them. You can also group your tags in folders. The original files are not touched by nifty box. it only writes a comment to your files and stores an alias of the original file to its own database. Because of this it is much faster than K.I.T. and because of the clean interface much more flexible than punakea. That's the PROs. Now the CONs: I don't understand why this program do not use spotlight integration. So you can search in spotlight for keywords you added with nifty box but inside the nifty box inferface you can't search inside the files you tagged. That's a real pity because you have to open each file, when looking for something very special. Another think which can be integrated but insnt' yet: when tagging a file by dragging it into a sub-sub folder, i personally would appreciate to give all categories of the folders to the file. Say my tag is "vacancies" and i have a folder "activities" and a subfolder "2006", i would like if the program would do an autmatic tagging with the words "activities" and "2006". Another feature which would be great would be the following. When placing a file on my destop and tagging it with nifty-box it would be great if nifty-box could move my file automaticlly to a specified folder on my computer (e.g the folder "unread documents" based in my "documents" folder) whereas another document (with the tagging "to do" has to be moved to my "work" folder).
Beside that whishes for future versions: I think nifty-box is one of the best storage managers around. It is a promising start.
