I use it for development on my local machine. Very quick to setup and get running.
Hapu: It's intended for personal development. Living-E, the company that makes MAMP, is going to release a deployment version. Note: It's kinda out of date on it's PHP version (5.x.x development branch).
Really nice to test and work on websites before publishing. Really easy to use.
seems the download link has changed to http://mamp.info/en/download.html
This is a real gift. Prior to finding MAMP I had considered setting up all of the various parts to run a test localhost, this is just drag and drop simplicity.
There are a couple of caveats, the databases are stored in the central MAMP folder so you have to copy or move these before upgrading - or lose everything, as daft-me did. And the file permissions have to be just so, somehow I managed to mess them up on the last upgrade, that and something else I managed to do, meant I had to re-download.
MAMP really should come as standard with Mac OS X, many thanks to living-e.
Comment and replies on Quicksilver:
One of the best utilities ever.
I love this app. I install this on every Mac I use. I just feels wierd using a computer without it. Prolly my number one app for productivity.
I love this app, but for some reason it consitently caused my computer to crash. I had to uninstall it. It pained me.
Next to Growl, Quicksilver is the MUST MUST have install on every mac.
Like most other commenters, I love this application, and it has so completely infiltrated the way I use my Mac, I feel hamstrung when I have to sit at someone else's computer. My favorite plug-ins: the Network Locations Module (change my network settings with a keystroke) and the del.icio.us module (all my del.icio.us links are stored in the catalog and can be launched directly form the keyboard). Definitely read some of the web articles cited here to get an idea of just how much this app can do.
some people are saying QuickSilver is one of the best apps for Mac...
WRONG
it's THE BEST / MOST USEFUL app for Mac
Sorry, but I just don't get this.
Open an app? Put the apps folder in the Dock, hold it to pop it up, open the app you want.
Use an app often? Put it in the Dock.
What am I missing here?
Perhaps I haven't given Quicksilver a fair shake, but I forget it's even installed most of the time. I guess I'm happier with Apple's built in UI.
While this app isn't for everyone, it IS for everyone who wants everything their computer can do at their fingertips. It's the power of a comand line interface, with the ease of a beautiful GUI.
Quicksilver is arguably the most full featured app in the launcher category and I can see why it appeals to so many people. The plugin architecture and active developer community are great. And you can't argue with "free".
But I still like LaunchBar better. Believe me, I've really tried to like Quicksilver. I've installed it at least a half dozen times but have always come to the same conclusion: nice features but otherwise unintuitive, inefficient, gaudy, and sometimes unstable. By comaprison, LaunchBar feels absolutely effortless, unobtrusive, and reliable.
I'll still keep an eye on Quicksilver though. It has a lot of potential.
I consider any computer that doesn't have Quicksilver installed to be broken.
Beta 50 is now out and fixes, among other things, the indispensible del.icio.us plug-in.
I installed the latest version (ß51) and have to say that for me QS is finally coming of age. I was a long-time Butler user but lately have been exclusively using QS, mainly because I find it is faster on my old 800MHz G4 machine. There are still a few stability quirks but nothing that puts me off anymore. I look forward to this just getting better and better but would also recommend Butler to anyone - it is worth trying them both to see which best suits your needs.
Love it, love it, love it. Makes my life so much easier.

Great for quick editing of mp3s. Reminds me of Cool Edit from back in the day.
