Comment and replies on StoryMill:
This is an excellent piece of software for writers who don't want suggestions on plot ideas or character development or spelling and grammar suggestions as they type. The interface is clean and well-organized, the basic features are easily accessibly via five minutes spent in the tutorial, and more advanced features are also easily learned. It's more of an organization system for writers than writing software. The forums are excellent and the developer is very hands-on, very communicative. $29.99 is a steal.
Ok, Scrivener is more complex (and more costly), StoryMill (former Avenir) is less complicated. I wrote one book on that and StoryMill works fine, even some small bugs are still here. And what I love: annotation system, that really helps even not in feature list, but in praxis.
StoryMill is my choice for novel writing. With its complex possibilities for organizing and visualising (TIMELINE is the word!) is StoryMill better than its – also strong, but less effective – compatitor Scrivener etc.
Comment and replies on Snapz Pro X:
The listing shows version 2.03. It's 2.0.3...makes a difference to some apps like AppFresh.
Personally I prefer Skitch, though Snapz Pro still wins for video capture.
@isaiah: almost a year later, it's finally Intel compatible. ;)
Prior to the Universal Binary update, I was using Snapz Pro on my MacPro with no problems at all - but then again I wasn't using the video portion.
This is by far the best screen capture app on the Mac market.
Use IshowU, it is cheaper and it make a better movie compression .
Great App. I really love it. Good UI with a lot of functionnalities.
I have only one regret (but a BIG-BIG one) : we can't remove the splashscreen when logging.
Without this bad point, the software is perfect.
Capturing movies on my MacMini 2006 model. This is the fastest program I have found for this. I have tried several, inclusive iShowU.
Unfortunately SnapzProX has a bad UI. The window doesn't behave like a typical Mac window and always gets hidden below all the other windows I have open. And is not too happy with Leopard Spaces.
You need to specify that you want to record audio BEFORE recording, if you have forgotten then the audio is just lost and you can start all over.
After you have recorded, if you select the wrong options for video codec/audio then the video is lost and you can start all over.
Picking the right video codec is very difficult, because there are no description inside the program of what works best.
There is no VU-meter to ensure the audio is ok before recording.
Movie recording speed is good. Encoding speed is terrible slow. Too pricy. Doesn't behave like a modern mac program. Loosing data is unacceptable. Usability is bad. I use it a lot, but I don't like it. If it wasn't for the recording speed I had picked something else.
My advise for Ambrosia. Make movie recording the primary feature. Make it impossible to loose data. Make the encoding faster. Then you will have a good program.

If you're looking for a tool of this nature, give Scrivener a try. It's my choice in this category, although Avenir is a fine app.
