I have tried VLC, Mplayer OSX, Perian and Niceplayer (with Perian) for watching *.mkv files. All of them are fine players and have their merits, when watching mkv files up to 720p. However, being on a Macbook Pro I need the players to support both CPUs for 1080p playback otherwise there is frozen frames (VLC), choopy playback (Perian) or video slowdown leading to lip-sync (Mplayer OSX).
XBMC gives me hope that there will eventually be a method for watching those fine HD mkvs on a mac (something the windows users are already doing). It played all the problematic files fluidly.
The only trouble is that I have to restart the program in order to start a different movie file since it crashes a lot. But the playback power is great since it uses >100% CPU (checked via Activity Monitor) for 1080p mkv playback.

Leopard only
From the faq:
"Tiger support is not a near term goal, but it is a possibility in the future. It's obviously quite possible to get XBMC for OS X to work on Tiger, but the team has determined that it is also non-trivial. As we get closer to a 1.0 release we will poll the community to see how much demand there is for Tiger support."

Viewing WMVs with Flip4Mac: open instantly but loading takes ages, or wait for QuickTime to load whole movie and you can seek. Viewing them in VLC: open instantly and seek works, but can't determine the keyframes, so the action kind of smudges out till the next keyframe hits. MPlayer opens instantly and seeks instantly and correctly. Second cool thing: MKV files from HD material opens instantly and seeks instantly. VLC crashes every once in a while when opening these files.

MPlayer can also play RealVideo and RealAudio if you install the optional codecs package.

Note: mplayer logs names of files it has played, in console.log, located in /Library/Logs/Console.
(ie: system folder, not the user's ~/Library folder.)

After using this program my Default Document Icon went missing. When I try to start the program I get:

An error has occurred.
Index: 76 Icon: InternetLocationGeneric.icns

Anybody else had any problems such as this?

Great free alternative to CandyBar. I never found CandyBar to be worth the price tag and was ecstatic when I came across this gem.

Kudos to the developer. One of the best free apps I've ever seen.

Latest version seems to have a bug which causes it not to start after it was used and the Mac has been to sleep....restart fixes it, but it's quite annoying.

I love this app too. Though on my Mac having it installed caused iWork Papers to crash constantly. Uninstalling prevented this from happening and reinstalling made it happen again....

This is probably the best $15 I've spent on my mac yet. Combine it with a Kensington Expertmouse and it's mousing heaven.

This is, hands down, an essential mac application. I cant tell you how many times ive tried to 'apple+shift' move windows on other macs and even pc's!! Bought it literally 10 seconds after downloading demo. A++++ (in ebay terms)
