HexEdit

HexEdit is a hexadecimal file editor for the Macintosh. The most widely used editor of its kind on the platform, HexEdit can handle file sizes of up to four gigabytes with ease, yet has memory requirements of less than a megabyte (with colour turned off). It can also compare files for similarities or differences.

iKana

iKana is a Japanese learning aide which helps to teach you the two Japanese phonetic alphabets Hiragana and Katakana. iKana can also be extended to teach other alphabets and Kanji.

iKana has three main learning components - flash cards, speed recognition and a Romanization test.

Flash cards are the starting point for beginners new to kana. Use the flash card viewer to help you memorize the different kana. The flash card viewer can be controlled with an Apple Remote.

The speed recognition test helps to reinforce your memory and improve your reading speed with an 'against the clock' multiple-choice test. The speed recognition test can also be controlled with an Apple Remote.

The word Romanization test helps you practice reading whole words by translating them from kana into Romaji. This test helps you learn some Japanese vocabulary as well as improving your translation and reading skills.

The vocabulary module lets you further practice your kana reading skills and learn Japanese words. Using a flash card like interface you can quickly create and browse vocabulary sets. Words can be added from the dictionary or imported from tab-delimited word lists.

iKanji

iKanji contains 2230 kanji, that includes Japanese school grade kanji up to level 6 and JLPT levels 1 to 4. In addition there are 214 kanji radicals. Nearly 20,000 example words are also provided in kanji and kana with their meaning in English.

The flash card module lets you quickly browse and search for kanji, shows you animated stroke animations for many kanji as well as readings, meanings and example words.

All kanji flash cards in iKanji are freely editable and you can easily add your own too if you want to practice additional kanji.

Jing

Jing is a screen capture application that allows you to select and capture parts of your screen and save that area as a static picture or even a movie.

The thing that makes Jing unique is that it has a "share" button, which allows you to share the image or video with a friend by connecting to the free screencast.com image hosting solution. nLyrics

nLyrics is a free, open source and full-featured iTunes companion.

nLyrics basically provides four major functions. The first is that nLyrics enables you to control iTunes through hot keys.

The second is that nLyrics will dynamically load (or search on the Internet if proper plugins are provided) the lyrics of the currently played song and display the lyrics for you just when a particular line is sung by your favourite singer. In the new version, a full screen mode is added powered by Quartz Extreme. Try it out by yourself!

Thanks to TagLib 1.4 adapted by nLyrics to enable you to convert non-UTF8 encodings of the tag information embedded in the music files to UTF8 encoding, just like (and probably not like) what ID3MOD2 does. While the shareware ID3MOD2 can only convert MP3 files, nLyrics supports various file types including mp3, m4a, ape, mpc, flac, ogg, shn and wv.

The new nLyrics bundles several plugins with this release and one of them will search the cover arts in Amazon.com for you if there is not an artwork embedded in the music file. Currently, this particular plugin named Gibbon supports English, French, Germany and Japanese songs.

Pacifist

Pacifist 2.5.2 is a shareware application that opens Mac OS X .pkg package files, .dmg disk images, and .zip, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, and .xar file archives and allows you to extract individual files and folders out of them. This is useful, for instance, if an application which is installed by the operating system becomes damaged and needs to be reinstalled without the hassle of reinstalling all of Mac OS X. Pacifist is also able to verify existing installations and find missing or altered files*, and Pacifist can also examine the kernel extensions installed in your system to let you see what installer installed them, and whether the installer was made by Apple or a third-party.

Pages

Apple's word processing/page layout software. Easy to use and relatively inexpensive (includes the excellent "Keynote" program in the price). Might not replace Word or InDesign but is terrific for making academic posters for conferences.

Property List Editor

From Wikipedia: Property List Editor an application included in the Apple Developer Tools for editing plist files. It can be found on the Mac OS X Install disc under Developer Tools. Property List Editor only edits plist files, not any other XML format.

PTHVolume

PTHVolume 2 is an utility for Mac OS X 10.5 and later that is used to control the volume of your Mac OS X machine. For most people the included Mac OS X widget is sufficient for controlling volume. There are however two situations in which PTHVolume 2 is a much more useful alternative.

Multiple Output Device Control. The Mac OS X 10.5 volume widget works for changing the volume if you only have a single audio device connected to your computer. But what happens when you have multiple audio devices? This is where PTHVolume 2 excels, you can individually control the volume of multiple devices without opening up System Preferences.

Volume Control with Non Apple Keyboards. Your type of keyboard is a very personal choice, if you like the keyboards Apple provides then you can just use the standard volume keys. But what happens if you like the IBM Model M style of keyboards, without custom volume keys. Well PTHVolume 2 comes to your rescue, you can set keyboard shortcuts for any and all volume devices.

Split & Concat

In Internet newsgroups large files often are split into smaller parts since messages can't be of more than a certain size to be able to post them in newsgroups. For that reason you can find often binary files that are split in parts like filename.mp3.001, filename.mp3.002, filename.mp3.003 It is possible to put these parts together using commands in the Terminal yet not everybody is handy with that.
